Thetotalvalueof21,activeconstructionprojectsintheGulfCooperationCouncil(GCC)reached$2.4trillionatthebeginningofSeptember,accordingtoareport.
Ofthese,thetotalvalueofurbanconstructionprojectsreached$1.18trillion,saidtheBNCConstructionIntelligencereport.
ThisreflectsthebuoyancyoftheprojectmarketandthefactthatthegovernmentsofthesixGulfcountriesaredeterminedtocarryoutimportantinfrastructureprojects,accordingtoBNCNetwork.
Theurbanconstructioncontractsconstitute80percentofthecontractsawardedforallsectorsinGCCandindollartermsthistranslatesto49percentofthetotalcontractsawarded.
“ThegovernmentsandtheprivatesectordevelopersoftheGCCappeartobeunmovedbytheslowdownintheglobaleconomyandtheloweroilpriceenvironment.OurlatestGCCConstructionIntelligencereportshowsthattheprojectsaregoingaheaddespitethechallengingglobaleconomicsituation,”AvinGidwani,chiefexecutiveofficerofBNCNetwork,said.
“Thecontinuationoftheseprojects,worthDh8.8trillion($2.4trillion),willkeepmanybusinesses,especiallythesub-contractors,suppliersremaininbusinessandhelpsavemillionsofjobsacrosstheregion.Iftheseprojectscontinueasplanned,theregionwillnotonlybesavedfromapossiblerecessionandjoblosses,butalsothesewillensurestrongereconomicgrowth,”headded.
TheGCCaccountsfor85percentofallactiveprojectsintheMenaandindollarterms,theseprojectsaccountfor68percentofthetotalestimatedvalue.
Thereportwasreleasedatlastmonth’sCityscapeGlobalexhibitioninDubai,duringwhichseveralnewprojectswererevealed,includingaDh24billion($6.53billion)mixed-usemaster-plannedprojectinSharjah,aDh3billion($million)newneighbourhoodneartheUniversityCityatJurainainSharjahaswellasaDh1.5billion($million)luxuryhotelandresidentialtowercalledDubawi,tobemanagedbyShuaaCapital.
ThevalueoftheoilandgasprojectsintheGulfreached$billion(Dh1.21trillion),whilethetotalvalueofutilityprojectintheGulfwas$billioninSeptember,thereportshowed.
